A scoping review of ICU medical equipment alarm management strategies and effectiveness

Abstract: Objective To conduct a scoping review of ICU medical equipment alarm management strategies and their effectiveness to provide reference for optimize medical equipment alarm management. Methods Using the Arksey and O‘Malley framework,studies related to ICU alarm management were retrieved from databases including CNKI,VIP,WanFang,PubMed,Web of Science,Embase and EBSCO. The search period covered the database establishment up to June 30,2024. The included literature was screened,and the alarm management strategies were categorized. Results 30 studies were included,the intervention strategies focused on nurse-led multidisciplinary collaboration,alarm management bundle,nurse training and education,and optimization of alarm management procedures. After the intervention,the number of alarms decreased by 11.2% to 88.5%,alarms duration was shortened,nurses‘ knowledge and skills in alarm management improved,and nurse alarm fatigue outcome varied. Conclusion Effective alarm management can greatly improve ICU alarm quality. Optimizing it requires strengthening ICU nurses‘ leadership and standardizing team collaboration. The main goal remains patient safety,with consideration for reducing alarm fatigue among nurses.
